St Monans

St Monans Church

St Monans Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in use in Scotland. Although renovated in 1828, much of the original stonework (thought to be 13th century) is still visible. The church is thought to have began around the 9th century when Irish clergy fled to Scotland, bringing with them the relics of St Monan.

The remains of Newark castle can be found about a kilometre south west of St Monans Parish Church. Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, the castle stands on a promontary overlooking the sea. Parts of the castle are fairly well preserved, particularly the kitchen with it's vaulted roof.
